Encouraging the use of Real Nappies in a nursery setting would:

  • Reduce Waste - a nursery with 30 babies in nappies, being changed an average of 4 times per day can equate to over 31,000 nappies in a year! This is around 780 black bags arriving at landfill sites where the nappies take several hundred years to break down.
  • Save Money - By recycling and encouraging parents to switch to Real Nappies this will significantly reduce the amount of waste produced thereby reducing your waste bills. If you suggest that parents supply the nappies, liners and waterproof bag (for returning the nappies) then Real Nappies present no actual cost to the nursery.
  • Potty Training - With Real Nappies the association is there much earlier between emptying the bladder and feeling wet, thereby speeding up the potty training process.
  • Health - With no chemical gels or paper pulp Real Nappies are a more natural option. There is also no higher incidence of nappy rash compared with disposables.
  • Hygiene - Using biodegradable flushable liners means that solid waste is flushed down the toilet. Real nappies can then be stored in a waterproof bag and returned to the parents.

There are several ways you could promote the fact that you encourage Real Nappies:

  • Parent Information Pack - State you encourage the use of Real Nappies, if necessary specifiy which types and what you require the parents to supply. We can also supply you with leaflet inserts should you require.
  • Real Nappy Toolkit - This is free on loan from your Local Authority and can be used at information days and events, or used as a display.
  • Invite a Real Nappy volunteer to give a talk to staff and/or parents.
  • Sell Real Nappies and accessories (such as liners, and reusable swimwear) and earn additional income for the Nursery.

You could also achieve Real Nappy Friendly status whereby you agree to support any parent wishing to use their own washable nappies on their child while they attend your nursery. You will receive a framed poster confirming your status and will be listed as a real nappy friendly nursery on our map of Wales.
